Meriam Braanaas
Meriam Braanaas is one of Scandinavia’s most exciting emerging comedy directors, with a sharp instinct for character, performance and dialogue, as well as a particular talent for breaking the fourth wall and creating an immediate connection with the viewer.
Her comedy is rooted in people. The more specific the character, the better. Through precise casting, subtle performances and just the right amount of awkwardness, Meriam finds humour that feels observed rather than constructed, often allowing a look, a pause or a perfectly delivered line to do the heavy lifting.
After studying journalism and earning her Master’s in Film from USC School of Cinematic Arts, Meriam stayed in Los Angeles and got a taste for directing commercials after assisting legendary directing collective TRAKTOR.
Since establishing herself as a director, she has quickly developed a distinct comedic voice, directing campaigns for brands including Telenor, BankID, Tekna, Grilstad, ice and SpareBank1. Her BankID film Glupsk Nonne picked up Gold at Gullblyanten as well as Sølvfisken.
When she’s not directing commercials, Meriam develops film and drama projects and has most recently directed comedy for NRK’s Humoretaten.
